NASSAU- A judge has granted bail to the man accused of killing a mother and her daughter in Long Island after prosecutors failed to try him within a reasonable time.
Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson set Nathan Harding’s bail at $9,900 on the condition that he remains in New Providence and signs in a police station three times a week.
Harding faces two counts each of kidnapping, rape and murder.
Prosecutors allege that Harding kidnapped and sexually assaulted Jane Harding, 62, and her daughter Melissa Hui, 34, before he beat them to death.
Ms. Harding and her daughter were found buried in a shallow grave on February 28, 2020, three days after they were reported missing.
Hui’s employers became concerned when she didn’t show up for work at Long Island Petroleum.
Harding’s trial was first set for May 2022, but it didn’t begin because scientific reports were not ready.
Three more trial dates were vacated for the same reason. The reports remain outstanding and the matter is set for trial on August 2023.
