NASSAU- Three suspended cops were charged with murder on Monday in the shooting death of Danrico Carey, while a fourth officer was charged with causing dangerous harm to him.
Corporals Archibald Miller Jr, Thomas Thurston and Constables Lee Dormeus and Kevin Greenslade Jr learned of the amended charges when they appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly to receive a voluntary bill of indictment.
All four officers were initially charged with manslaughter over the November 13, 2021 incident.
Miller, Thurston and Dormeus are now charged with murder and Greenslade is charged with causing dangerous harm.
The magistrate did not remand the officers, who are now facing a murder charge, into custody. Instead, they were allowed to remain free on the $9,500 bail that they received on the manslaughter charge.
The officers, who are all represented by K. Melvin Munroe, will be arraigned in the Supreme Court on July 1.
At the time of Carey’s death, police reported that officers fatally shot him because they feared for their lives after he pointed a gun at them.
Carey’s death was initially referred to the Coroner’s Court for an inquest, which does not determine criminal or civil liability.
However, the officers faced criminal charges after investigators reviewed footage from their body cameras.
