Nassau, BAHAMAS- Murder convict Marcello McKenzie has been sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment for a 2020 fatal shooting.
He faced a potential maximum sentence of 60 years.
A nine-member jury on May 31 convicted the 38-year-old of the murder of Godfrey “Rob”Sawyer, a former death row inmate.
On June 28, 2020, Sawyer was shot dead on the porch of his Nassau Village home after an argument with two men.
The suspects fled in a white minibus, which was intercepted by police on patrol in Pinewood Gardens. Police arrested McKenzie and Jamaal Armbrister, who was killed during a police-involved shooting in 2022.
According to authorities, Armbrister tried to rob a police officer’s wife outside of their home in Elizabeth Estates. After hearing the commotion, the officer reportedly came to his wife’s rescue and shot Armbrister.
