Con man fined for trying to dupe priest out of $2k

Nassau, Bahamas- A con man posing as a well-known lawyer tried to swindle an Anglican priest out of more than $2,000.

Antwan Sands phoned Canon Basil Tynes on July 21, 2021 while pretending to be Obi Pindling, the son of late prime minister Sir Lynden Pindling.

When Canon Tynes remarked that the person on the line didn’t sound like Mr Pindling, Sands claimed that a tumor in his neck had altered his voice.

He told Canon Tynes that he needed emergency surgery in the United States, but he didn’t have enough money.

Sands claimed that he needed $2,068 by July 22. Canon Tynes agreed and Sands said he would send someone to collect the money.

Canon Tynes wrote the cheque. But he called police after he spoke to the real Mr Pindling.

Police arrested Antoine Levarity when he came to collect the cheque and police arrested Sands.

They were jointly charged with attempted fraud by false pretenses.

However, Sands changed his plea to guilty earlier this month when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans for trial.

Sands paid a $1,000 fine to avoid spending eight months in prison. As a result, the prosecution withdrew the charge against Levarity.
