Crooked cashier repays $26k

NASSAU- A sticky-fingered cashier was ordered to make restitution after she admitted to stealing over $26,000 from Radiation Therapy Associates in the Medical Pavilion.

Anishka Whyms, 44, who lost her job as a result of the theft, pleaded guilty to stealing and falsification of accounts when she appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly on December 10.

Whyms stole $26,260.22 between April 22, 2016 and December 30, 2019.

She carried out the thefts by skimming money from cash payments made by cancer patients.

The company ordered an audit after patients who were asked to settle their accounts said that they already paid their bills.

The subsequent findings led to the dismissal and arrests of two cashiers.

The court heard that Whyms fell on hard times after her husband walked out on her.

She also claimed that having a stroke added to her financial woes.

Whyms came to court with a manager’s cheque and repaid the stolen money in full. Additionally, she paid a fine of $5,000 to avoid spending a year in prison.

Meanwhile, Indira Cleare, another former cashier from the same business, denied stealing $20,024.40 between May 2018 and January 2020.

Cleare, 41, of Nassau Village, was granted $9,500 bail on the condition that she reports to the East Street South Police Station on Mondays.

Her trial is scheduled for February 8.
