Nassau, BAHAMAS- A remand inmate caught with 1 ½ ounces of ganja in his maximum security cell has been jailed for eight months.
Cleophus Smith will spend an additional six months in prison if he doesn’t pay a $1,000 fine.
The 29-year-old pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to supply over the November 27, 2021 seizure.
Smith is in prison awaiting trial for an armed robbery and firearm possession charge.
Prosecutors say that he and two other men robbed Sidney Sinclair of $5,236 outside the Bank of the Bahamas on September 21, 2021.
Police cornered the suspects after their getaway car was spotted at the Southwest Plaza a short time later. They allegedly seized a .40 pistol from the car.
Last month, Smith paid a $2,500 fine to avoid a nine-month sentence for the prison smuggling attempt while on bail for murder.
Smith tossed a bag containing almost three pounds of marijuana and four cellphones over the prison’s wall on May 25, 2021.
The smuggling attempt took place weeks after Smith was released on bail for the September 2019 murder of Anthony Wright.
On July 2, police charged him with the prison drug smuggling attempt.
He was also charged with the June 25, 2021 murder of Shavonya Adderley and the attempted murder of her uncle Avery Francis.
The charges stem from a shooting at First Street Coconut Grove.
Within weeks, Smith was granted bail for the murder and attempted murder due to weak evidence.
However, he returned to prison months later on the armed robbery charge.
